  1. Inuit Art Quarterly is a magazine dedicated to “Inuit and circumpolar arts, connecting Inuit Nunangat and readers around the world.” $1 per word for print and online. They say this means they’ll pay $1,750 for feature articles and interviews and $500 for artist profiles and other front-of-book pieces. To learn more, refer to this page.
  2. Hyperallergic is an art blog, covering visual artists from around the world. According to their guidelines, they look for “fresh perspectives from freelance contributors, especially those who come from historically marginalized communities..” They publish art reviews, reported stories, interviews, photo essays, opinion pieces, and more. Their standard base rates are $250 for short reviews, essays, and articles (400-600 words) and $500 for longer reviews, features, essays, and reported stories (800+ words).   3. Artsy is a platform for collecting and discovering art. It is “used by art lovers, museum-goers, patrons, collectors, students, and educators to discover, learn about, and collect art.” According to an old payment report, they paid $0.20 per word for a 1000-word feature.   4. Burnaway is an Atlanta-based magazine about contemporary art and culture in the American South and the Caribbean. According to their website, they pay $0.30 per word. To contact them, visit this page.
  5. Sojourners is a magazine and an online publication that covers faith, politics, social justice, war, peace, community and art from a biblical perspective. According to their website, they pay $50 per poem. They also say they “pay for reported pieces, based on depth of reporting, and for strongly researched analysis pieces.” One payment report suggests that they paid $0.38 per word for a feature.   6. Art Jewelry Forum (AJF) is a nonprofit organization that is a leading platform for critical thinking on contemporary jewelry. They are accepting proposals for articles and reviews and pay $375 for interviews, $500 for reviews and $500 for researched articles. To learn more, visit their submissions page.   7. Elephant is a magazine about contemporary art and visual culture. They welcome submissions by writers and artists. According to an old payment report, they paid $0.14 per word. To learn more, visit their Write For Us page.
  8. C Magazine is a quarterly published contemporary art and criticism periodical based in Toronto, Canada. Each issue of the magazine has a theme. They welcome “writing on contemporary art and culture that is lively and rigorously engaged with current ideas and debates.” They accept pitches for reviews (800 to 1,000 words), columns (800 to 1,000 words), and feature essays, cultural analysis, and interviews (1,200 to 3,500 words).   9. First American Art Magazine’s goal is to foster a “critical dialogue about Native art. ” They aim to bridge the gap between academia and the general public. They present the arts from an indigenous perspective. An old payment report indicated a payment of $525. Word count for editorials is 600 – 700 words on one page, 1,000 – 1,200 words on two pages while for features word count is 2,000 – 3,500.
