  1. Self covers health and wellness. They are always seeking new writers and are especially excited to work more frequently with BIPOC, LGBTQ+ writers and writers from other marginalized groups. They want stories that explore personal, community, or public health, ideally with a service element. Their main categories of focus are health, fitness, food, beauty, love, and lifestyle. According to their pitch guide, rates start at $250 for short and quick news stories, $500 for reported service stories, and $750 for features.
  1. Foodism is a food print magazine published by twenty-two, a Canadian publishing house and creative agency. They pay for print-first features, which are then repurposed online, and are interested in original stories that explore Toronto’s diverse and layered food scene. They also accept travel features, which must have a unique perspective.   1. Allrecipes is a community-driven food brand. They are always looking for new writers, recipe developers, and equipment reviewers to join their team of contributors. They are accepting recipes, technique-driven service articles, and features (particularly personal essays and food histories). A payment report indicates they paid $0.47 for a 750-word opinion.   1. The Vegan is a quarterly magazine by the Vegan Society. They offer updates, ideas, and resources about veganism to their subscribers. They accept pitches from vegan writers, journalists, or recipe developers. According to their main page, their fees start from £250 for articles and £150 for reviews.
  1. Runner’s World is a magazine and website that publishes “stories about every aspect of running, from tips on how to get started to human interest pieces to training plans for competitive runners aiming for a new PR, and everything in between.” They accept story pitches from writers, including pitches for features, service (nutrition/health/training), news, and human interest/culture. Rates vary and depend on story length, required research/reporting, turnaround time, and more. According to a deleted tweet by their health and fitness director, they pay $350 to $5,000 per story.   1. Triathlon Magazine Canada is a triathlon publication that covers training, nutrition, gear, events, and more. They are seeking “story submissions from writers, photographers, athletes, coaches and enthusiasts.” According to their guidelines, they pay $50 to $200 per story. For details, refer to this page.
  1. The Maine Organic Farmer & Gardener is a quarterly newspaper that publishes articles on a variety of farming and gardening topics. They’re interested in everything from livestock care to nutrition. Word count for features is 1,200- 2,200 words; for How-To articles 500-1,200 words, 1200 words for Interviews and 300-500 words for reviews.   1. Triathlete Magazine is the largest newsstand publication that covers the sport of triathlon. Their “editorial focus is placed on multisport training tips and programs, nutrition articles, gear and apparel guides, athlete profiles, triathlon-related travel stories and timely news pieces relating to the triathlon lifestyle.” Their full-length features are generally 800 to 1,500 words. Their news pieces, training articles or nutrition pieces are of 500 to 800 words. According to an old payment report, they paid $0.50 per word for a 500-word FOB.
