- Cottage Life is a media brand for and about water-based cottagers. Although most of their readers are based in Ontario, they encourage stories about cottages and cottaging in other parts of Canada. They run columns and shorter features on subjects such as boating, real estate, building projects, cottage design and architecture, nature, personal cottage experience, and environmental, political, and financial issues of concern to cottagers. Payment is made on acceptance of a fully satisfactory manuscript; pay rates are not mentioned. To learn more, refer to this page.
- International Living publishes articles on living overseas. They’re looking for unique, personal articles about global travel, living, retiring, investing, and real estate that is not available anywhere else at any price. They have previously indicated pay of $75 for “daily postcards,” which share stories from expats, and up to $400 for other articles. Pay is based on word count. - Bank Foreclosures Sales is a website that lists foreclosed properties in the United States. According to their pitch guide, they pay up to $100 for guest posts about real estate, foreclosure, flipping houses, investing, or property-related articles.
- Dwell focuses on modern architecture and design. They publish “home tours, interviews, and essays illuminating the power of smart design.” They welcome real estate stories. According to their pitch guide, they pay 50 cents for web pieces, and $1 for print.
- Business Insider tells the global tech, finance, stock market, media, economy, lifestyle, real estate, AI and innovative stories. They are looking for freelance articles for their business, tech, and news verticals and for their lifestyle, entertainment, health, or parenting verticals. They welcome pitches of personal essays, as-told-tos, diaries, profiles, how-tos, reported features, and more. They state that ‘’rates vary and are determined by a variety of factors including the amount of reporting and research involved, the length of the article, and the experience of the writer.’’ They do not list pay rates, but a payment report indicates pay to be around $0.40 per word. All freelance pitches must be exclusive to Business Insider. To learn more, refer to this page.
- OUR HOMES is a quarterly glossy Canadian magazine of premium homes, real estate, and décor. Editors look for “accurate and lively writing that demonstrates knowledge of home building and decoration.” Although articles must include interviews and be based on research, they also must be entertaining. Editors encourage writers to submit their quality photos. According to their guidelines, payment is $0.25 per assigned word for freelance writing, and, if there is travel required, $0.40 a km after the first 60 kilometres travelled. - The Globe and Mail is a Canadian news media company. They cover news, politics, real estate, business, lifestyle and investing topics across multiple platforms. Their print and digital formats reach more than 6 million readers a week. According to payment reports, they paid $0.38 for a 1800-word opinion, editorial, or column. - Portland Monthly is a magazine that covers food, style, shopping, arts, culture, travel, and more in Portland, Oregon. On their website, they accept pitches for their 7 major channels: Eat & Drink, Style & Shopping, Arts & Culture, News & City Life, Travel & Outdoors, Home & Real Estate, and Health & Wellness. For their quarterly print magazine, they accept pitches for the following departments: Dispatch, Show & Tell, Spaces, and Arts & Culture. They also accept pitches for full-length feature stories on news, culture, or lifestyle. According to an old and now hidden tweet by their editor, they pay about 60/70 cents per word.
