So, without further ado, here’s today’s list…

  1. Sidetracked is a print and online journal featuring personal stories of adventures, expeditions, and exploration. They are looking for personal stories (1,500 to 2,000 words) of adventure accompanied by breathtaking photography. The stories should focus on the personal experience of adventure rather than the technical details. They previously indicated rates to be between £200 and £450, but current rates are unclear.   1. Final Gravity tells personal, human-centered stories about beer. They publish writing focused on people, places, ingredients, sensory experiences, cultural intersections, and the holistic ways we interact with and around beer. According to their pitch guide, their rates are about $0.15–$0.25 per word. For short pieces, they pay $125–$175; short features, $175–$250; longer features, $225–$300; and art features, $100. Poetry pays $50 per poem. If a writer is able to take their own quality photography for an article, they pay an extra $25. To learn more, refer to this page.
  1. Alaska Magazine is the region’s most respected publication. They’re accepting queries for pieces that demonstrate an excellent narrative slant and focus completely on Alaska and its culture. They previously listed pay as $200 to $700, and up to $1500 if photos are included. Current rates are not clear. To learn more, refer to their contributor guidelines.
  1. Eat Your World is an online guide to regional foods and drinks around the world. They are particularly interested in researched narrative pieces with a personal cultural angle–an ode to a favorite food from your culture or hometown, for example. According to their pitch guide, they pay $75 to $125 for original articles for their blog. For destination guides (with high-quality photos), they pay $350 to $500. To learn more, refer to this page.
  1. Sport Fishing Magazine publishes content for enthusiasts based on ‘serious saltwater fishing around North America and beyond’. They run features between 1,800 to 2,400 words. According to their submission guidelines, they pay $750 for print features, and up to $1,500 if photos are included. They pay $200 for 1,000 words and $300 for more than 1000 words for digital features.
  1. Trails is a quarterly, print-only magazine for “backpackers and people who sleep in the dirt.” The focus of the magazine is on “backpacking and other human/naturally-powered means of sleeping outdoors: bikepacking, canoe camping, even things like rafting or mountaineering are fair game.” The main emphasis of the magazine is on North American destinations. They’re always looking for story ideas from writers, photographers, etc. Feature length can be between 1,000 to 5,000 words. According to their pitch guide, they pay writers anywhere from $0.50 to $2 per word, depending on the difficulty of the story, the writer’s experience, and the commitment required. They can pay $35 to $400 per photo.
  1. Fly Fusion is a fly fishing magazine that combines the finest fishing writing, photography, and filmmaking in the world. They take feature submissions of a minimum of 2,500- 3,000 words with 20 curated photos, and photo essay editorials of 600 words in short-story format comprising 35 or more photos.   1. The Los Angeles Times Travel section seeks original destination articles that evoke a sense of place and time, with trips taken within the last two years. They look for first-person pieces (about 2,000 words) and Guidebooks (500 to 700 words). According to their writers’ guidelines, payment starts at $200, with extra for photos. Destination feature story payment starts at $350. Submissions can be mailed or emailed.
