  1. The American Scholar covers public affairs, literature, history, and culture through essays, fiction, poetry, and articles. They have been around since 1932. They are published quarterly by the Phi Beta Kappa Society. According to their pitch guide, they pay up to $500 for print articles and $250 for online articles. They ask for nonfiction submissions to be no longer than 6,000 words.
  1. Longreads is a publication dedicated to finding and sharing the best longform nonfiction storytelling on the web. They accept pitches for essays, reading lists, and reported features of various lengths and formats. They do not accept fiction. According to their pitch guide, rates start at $500 for essays and 50 cents per word for features, with a fixed $350 per reading list.
  1. Urban Omnibus is an online publication of The Architectural League of New York. They are devoted to “observing, understanding, and shaping the city.” Word limit for feature articles is 2500 words. According to their pitch guide, rates begin at $350 for an interview and $500 for a feature. 
  1. Contingent Magazine is a nonprofit online magazine for “everyone who asks questions about the past.” They prioritize pitches from people who have completed postgraduate work in history or a history-adjacent field. According to their pitch guide, they pay a base rate of $500 for features (2,000 to 3,000 words), $300 for shorts (800 to 1,500 words), and $250 for reviews (1,000 to 1,500 words). 
  1. Honeybadger is an error monitoring company that helps developers find and fix bugs quicker. They are looking for developers to create several series of articles. A series will consist of 3 to 5 stand-alone articles of 500 to 1,000 words each. According to their pitch guide, they pay $500 per article. They are not always open to submissions; be sure to carefully check their guidelines before submitting.
  1. Art Jewelry Forum (AJF) is a nonprofit organization that is a leading platform for critical thinking on contemporary jewelry. They are accepting proposals for articles and reviews. According to their website standards page, they pay $375 for interviews, $500 for reviews and $500 for researched articles. To learn more, visit their submissions page
  1. Hyperallergic is an art blog, covering visual artists from around the world. According to their guidelines, they look for “fresh perspectives from freelance contributors, especially those who come from historically marginalized communities..” They publish art reviews, reported stories, interviews, photo essays, opinion pieces, and more. According to their pitch guide, their standard base rates are $250 for short reviews, essays, and articles (400-600 words) and $500 for longer reviews, features, essays, and reported stories (800+ words). 
  1. The Blacklight is the New York Amsterdam News’ investigative unit. They are seeking experienced freelance journalists. They primarily work with freelance journalists based in the New York City area but are also open to working with those based outside the region. According to their pitch guide, they pay $250+ for fact checks (500 to 1,000 words, 1 to 2 interviews); $1/word for medium length articles (800 to 1,500 words, 2 to 4 interviews); $2/word or a flat commission fee for long form articles (1,500+ words, 4+ interviews); and $250 to $500+ for data visualizations.
