1. PublicSource is a news organization serving Pittsburgh and the region. They welcome story pitches from journalists and community members. According to their pitch guide, they pay $300 for first-person essays (800 to 1,200 words); $300 for event coverage (600 to 1,000 words); $400 for resource guides/explainers; $600 for enterprise stories; and $1,000 for investigative stories. They usually pay a 25% kill fee.

1. The Blacklight is the New York Amsterdam News’ investigative unit. They are seeking experienced freelance journalists. They primarily work with freelance journalists based in the New York City area but are also open to working with those based outside the region. According to their pitch guide, they pay $250+ for fact checks (500 to 1,000 words, 1 to 2 interviews); $1.00 per word for medium length articles (800 to 1,500 words, 2 to 4 interviews); $2.00 per word or a flat commission fee for long form articles (1,500+ words, 4+ interviews); and $250 to $500+ for data visualizations.

1. From Day One is “a web site and conference series on business and society.” Their editorial focus is on “innovative ways for companies to forge stronger relationships with their employees, customers, and community.” They’re looking for story pitches from freelance journalists, and want stories that dig into the human elements of how companies can build well-grounded values into their business and carry them out. 1. Engadget is a source for technology news and reviews. They cover the intersection of gaming, technology, and entertainment. As per their website, they are looking for seasoned freelance tech journalists who can write news, reviews or buying guides. According to their guidelines, they pay $32 an hour for news writing. Greater Good, the online magazine of the Greater Good Science Center, reports on scientific findings into the roots of individual and collective well-being, positive relationships, and compassionate behavior—what they call “the science of a meaningful life.” They are looking for experienced journalists or subject-matter experts, and don’t accept articles on spec, only pitches. According to their pitch guide, their base rate is 25 cents per assigned word. For certain types of pieces, they pay a flat rate: $220 for a research brief; $300 for a Q&A with an interview subject; $200-300 for pieces originally published elsewhere that require revision, and $300 for personal essays. 1. Balkan Insight is the flagship English-language website of the Balkan Investigative Reporting Network (BIRN). They offer news, analysis, investigations, features, profiles, and interviews on key issues in Southern and Eastern Europe. They welcome proposals for commentary and opinion pieces for their Reporting Democracy, a cross-border journalistic platform dedicated to exploring where democracy is headed across large parts of Europe. According to their pitch guide, the standard rate for a commentary piece written by experts at think tanks, research institutes, non-governmental organisations, academic institutions or government is 100 euros. For journalists, they state that they pay a competitive rate for feature stories, news analysis, interviews, videos and investigations on issues affecting the state of democracy in Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe. 1. The Cap Times is a local news organization delivering authoritative journalism focused on Madison, Wisconsin, and beyond. They welcome pitches from freelance journalists. According to their pitch guide, typical rate for a freelance story ranges from $100 for short assignments like reviews to $150 for news articles with several sources. The rate for more in-depth reporting, such as a 2,000-word cover story, can range from $500 to $700. Rates are determined by assigning editors on a case-by-case basis. 1. The Philanthropist Journal is a free online publication that provides a forum for thoughtful discussion and debate about the charitable and non-profit sector in Canada. They welcome pitches from professional journalists on subjects of interest to the sector. Writers are paid a competitive rate agreed upon when the story is accepted and invoiced after the final edit is accepted.
