We just put together a roundup of publications that pay for general news and reporting. This list includes publishers that cover a wide variety of topics. Many of them are lesser known publications, and many pay relatively well.

  1. The Parliament is a monthly print magazine covering EU news, policy, politics, and culture. They welcome pitches for features, interviews, and book reviews from freelance journalists. As per this post, they pay €0.5/word for reported features. To learn more, refer to their contact page and editorial calendar.
  2. Bolts is “a digital magazine that covers the nuts and bolts of power and political change, from the local up.” They’re always seeking freelancers to report on stories related to voting rights and criminal justice across the US. Most of the stories they publish involve original reporting and pay $800. They currently do not publish personal essays or op-eds. If interested, send your pitches to pitches@boltsmag.org.   3. Type Investigations is a nonprofit investigative newsroom. They cover the “most urgent issues of our time, including racial and economic justice, climate and environmental health, and civil and human rights.” Their written features are generally 4,000-5,000 words and they typically pay $3,000-$6,000 (including travel and reporting expenses).   4. Mic is a digital news company that “reports on the most important issues through diverse perspectives that challenge conventional thinking.” According to one payment report, they paid $0.42 per word.   5. Prism is a nonprofit that is working in tandem with Daily Kos. They elevate “stories, ideas, and solutions from leaders, thinkers, and activists whose voices are critical to a reflective democracy.” They are seeking pitches for articles, essays, and op-eds.   6. Economic Hardship Reporting Project (EHRP) is a nonprofit organization that produces compelling journalism about income inequality and poverty in America. They commission “op-eds, personal essays, investigative reports, rich narrative features, podcasts, nonfiction cartoons, photo essays, and documentaries about the United States.”  They pay $800 to $1500 for news stories, and up to $2,500 for narrative features and investigative reports. They generally pay $1.00 to $1.25 per word. They also have grants to cover travel expenses, up to $2,000. They also publish  personal essays, photo essays, comics, and audio projects.   7. The Real News Network is an independent, nonprofit news network that is focused on providing uncompromising and fact-based journalism. They cover politics, prisons and policing, racial justice, climate crisis, and economy and inequality. According to payment reports, they pay about $0.50 per word.   8. Positive News is a website and quarterly print magazine that “publishes good journalism about good things.” They are “pioneers of ‘constructive journalism’ – a new approach in the media, which is about rigorous and relevant journalism that is focused on progress, possibility, and solutions.” They are looking for unique pitches for the next edition of their magazine.   9. Current Affairs is a bimonthly print magazine of culture and politics. The magazine is “informative, entertaining, and beautiful, and loaded with everything from book reviews to fake advertisements.” They pay $200 for online articles and $300 for print articles.   10. Business Insider and Insider are looking for pitches for features. Business Insider is a website that covers business, financial, and technology news.
