- National Wildlife is a magazine published by the National Wildlife Federation, the largest private conservation group in the United States. It is quarterly, has an average circulation per issue of more than 300,000 and focuses on storytelling related to wildlife and habitat conservation, environmental justice, climate change, and more. They are looking for features from 1,000 to 2,000 words and departments (short pieces) from 350 to 900 words. According to their pitch guide, they pay $1.50 a word for print. - Documentary Magazine is a quarterly print journal by the International Documentary Association (IDA). The magazine is dedicated to “covering the art, craft, and business of documentary films.” They publish “interviews with filmmakers, festival dispatches, news items, reported investigations, open letters, critical essays, trend pieces, legal analysis, practical guides for documentarians, updates from IDA, and other essential updates.” According to their guidelines, they pay from $100 to $1,000 per piece. - Escapism is a travel print magazine published by twenty-two, a Canadian publishing house and creative agency. They pay for print-first travel guides, which are then repurposed online. Their travel features are also included in the company’s food magazine, Foodism. For those, features don’t have to have a food or beverage angle, but they do need a unique perspective. Escapism’s travel guides are less about first-person experiences in longform, and more about what to see, eat and do in a given destination. According to their pitch guide, they pay $600 for features of 1,200 – 1,500 words, and $0.40 per word for the travel guides, which should be 500 words and up. To learn more, refer to this page.
- Atmos is a nonprofit media organization focused on the cross-pollination of climate and culture, delivering award-winning journalism and creative storytelling through a biannual print magazine, daily digital features, original newsletters, and more. They seek compelling, thought-provoking content that explores the intersection of climate and culture. According to their editorial guidelines, the standard digital rate for writers is $.50/word. - Boston Review is a web and print magazine of ideas, politics, and culture. They primarily publish long-form essays on politics and ideas, ambitious book review essays, interviews, in-depth analysis of current affairs, and occasional reporting. They take a special interest in democracy, inequality, and matters of injustice, but they welcome submissions on any subject of broad public interest or concern. According to their pitch guide, they typically pay between $300 and $500 for web pieces, depending on length, for writers whose main source of income derives from their writing. - The Yale Review is a renowned journal of literature where readers can discover new literature by the best writers of our era alongside engaged, passionate criticism that is beautifully written and powerfully thought. They accept submissions of poetry, fiction, essays, review essays, and translations during their annual submission period from September 1 through September 30. They consider nonfiction pieces (both criticism and essays) of up to 3,000 words for online publication, and pieces of up to 6,000 words for their quarterly print issues. According to their pitch guide, they pay between $500 and $1,500 for print prose (around 3,000–5,000 words), between $200 and $500 for online pieces (around 1,000–3,000 words), and $150 for poems online or in print. - Parapraxis is an all-volunteer, print and online magazine of psychoanalysis. They publish twice a year in print (themed issues) and semi-frequently on their website (unthemed). According to their print form, print rates range from $500 to $800 depending on length. Website rates are a flat $500. To learn more, refer to this page.
- Mother Jones is an investigative news organization. They report on politics, criminal and racial justice, democracy, human rights, education, climate change, food/agriculture, and more. They commission revelatory and dynamic stories that teach people something they didn’t already know.
