25 Trade Magazines Open to Freelance Writers

Today, for our latest roundup of publishers, we have a list of 25 publications that pay for writing about specific professions and related themes. 

We’ve researched payment rates and found contact information for all of these publishers, to make it easy for you to connect with the right opportunity.

So, without further ado, here’s today’s list…

  1. Sifted offers in-depth reporting on the startup ecosystem of Europe. They’re always on the lookout for new writers. They’re especially seeking people who can help them build contacts and uncover the real story in areas and sectors where they might not have a reporter or on topics they might have overlooked. They accept pitches for deeply reported features (1,500 to 2,000 words) on a topic or trend that is relevant to Europe’s startup ecosystem or those who work in it. They also accept pitches for exclusive interviews and news (600 to 800 words) on European startups and venture capital firms.   1. Ambrook Research offers data-driven storytelling regarding modern agriculture. They’re presently focused on U.S.-based subject matter but will consider exceptions if a story has significant impacts or teachings that can be applied in the U.S. According to their guidelines, they generally pay between $0.50 and $1.00 per word.   1. Current is “the nonprofit news service for and about public media in the U.S.” Their primary audience consists of people who work at public radio and TV stations, networks and production companies. They “aim to provide public media professionals with valuable insights and information that helps them and their institutions reach new levels of success.” They accept story pitches from freelance journalists. According to their guidelines, they pay 75 cents/word for freelance assignments, though rates may vary for certain article formats such as Q&As. To learn more, read their writing guidelines.
  1. Distiller Magazine is a publication of the American Distilling Institute. They cover the art and business of craft distillation. They welcome queries for articles. Features are usually 1,200 to 2,000 words, and online articles between 300 and 500 words. According to their guidelines, they pay $0.50 per word for print stories, or $0.75 per word if photos are included. For online stories, they pay $100 plus $25 per image for online articles.   1. Geology for Investors offers “exclusive daily evaluations and opinion of junior mining company press releases and projects.” They are always seeking writers who have a strong geology, mining and/or exploration background to write original articles for their website. According to their guidelines, they typically pay $0.10 to $0.25 per word. Details here.
  1. H-Net is “an international interdisciplinary organization of scholars and teachers dedicated to developing the enormous educational potential of the Internet and the World Wide Web.” The editors of the H-Net Book Channel are looking for proposals for essays on topics related to new books. Book Channel essays are short-form (1,200 to 1,500 words) and have a list of titles for further reading. According to their guidelines, authors are paid an honorarium of $150. Details here.

SevenFifty Daily is an online magazine that covers “the business and culture of the beverage alcohol industry.” They want pitches that appeal to one of their “three audience segments: buyers (retail/somm), distributors, or suppliers (importers/producers).” They publish a mix of shorter (600 to 800 words) and longer (over 1,000 words) stories. According to their guidelines, their rates start at $0.75 per word. Visit their website here.

From Day One is a website and conference series that focuses on “innovative ways for companies to forge stronger relationships with their employees, customers, and community.” They are looking for story pitches from freelance journalists. They want ‘’stories that dig into the human elements of how companies can build well-grounded values into their business and carry them out.’’ According to their pitch guide, they pay $200 to $300 per story (800 to 1,000 words).
