So, without further ado, here’s today’s list…
- Type Investigations is a nonprofit investigative newsroom. They cover the “most urgent issues of our time, including racial and economic justice, climate and environmental health, and civil and human rights.” Their written features are generally 4,000-5,000 words and, according to their pitch guide, they typically pay $3,000-$6,000 (including travel and reporting expenses). - Wired is a magazine that covers the current and future trends in technology. They state they are a ‘’publication about change—about the ways science and technology are reshaping the world and what it means to be human.’’ According to their pitch guide, pay per story starts at about $2,500 and increases from there.
- The Sick Times is a site chronicling the Long Covid crisis. They prioritize pitches from people with Long COVID and related diseases. According to their pitch guide, they pay $1300 for reported news stories of 1200-1500 words and $400 for essays of 1000-1200 words.
- Asimov Press features writing about biology and its impact on our world. They welcome pitches from “writers who can make sense of biology’s impacts on climate, energy, security, agriculture, materials, and medicine.” They publish essays; Moonshots; speculative fiction; interviews and photo essays. According to their pitch guide, they pay $1,500 for essays under 2,500 words and $2,000 for longer pieces, and $1,000 for fiction.
- IGN is an internet media company that covers video games, TV, movies, tech, and comics. They’re seeking game features, entertainment features, news, previews, and reviews. According to their pitch guide, rates are $300-$1,000+ for games and entertainment features, $30-$400 for news, $300 for previews, and $150-$400 for reviews. To learn more, refer to their guidelines.
- Logic is a print and digital magazine about technology and society. They publish 3 times a year. They are looking for reported articles, features, essays, and profiles for their next issue. According to their pitch guide, pay begins at $1200 and goes up to $4000.
- Jewish Currents is a quarterly magazine and website that is “committed to the rich tradition of thought, activism, and culture of the Jewish left.” According to their freelancer agreement, Jewish Currents pays $400+ for analysis, $500+ for news reports, $300+ for long conversations, and $150+ for short ones. Web features start at $1,000, print features at $1/word, and photographers get $300/day plus $50 per printed photo. For details, refer to this page.
- Legion Magazine bills itself as Canada’s military history magazine. They cover military history, military and veterans affairs, policing issues, issues of concern to senior citizens, health, recreation, humour and current affairs of interest to a national audience.
