  1. Outback Magazine is a magazine about the Australian Outback. Topics of interest include those on soft adventure experiences, stations, dining, aspects of living in the outback, and historical items in a contemporary context. According to their submission guidelines, payment rates are AUD 0.40-50/word; AUD 350/page of words and photos.
  1. Westerly Magazine publishes creative writing and scholarship from throughout the world, but maintains a special emphasis on Australia, particularly Western Australia, and the Asian region. They publish short stories, poetry, memoir and creative nonfiction, essays and literary criticism. Word count for fiction and creative non-fiction is 3500 words maximum, 5000 words for scholarly articles, and for reviews, it’s 800 words. According to their submissions guidelines, they pay AU$ 250 for one poem or AU$ 300 for a poetic sequence, AU$ 300 for prose (including scholarly work) and visual art/photo essays/comics, and AU$ 180 for online publication (including reviews).
  1. Australian Shooter, Australian Hunter, Australian & New Zealand Handgun and The Junior Shooter Magazines are published by the Sporting Shooters’ Association of Australia (SSAA). They accept letters, stories, and reviews. They pay contributors for first-use publication but not for subsequent use of work. Word length is preferred around 1500 words for Australian Shooter and 2000 for Australian Hunter (less for reviews). Stories submitted to the SSAA should not be submitted to other Australian shooting or hunting publications. According to their submission guidelines, they pay 30 cents per word and $30 per photo published. They pay $250 for a main photo used on the front cover of one of their magazines.   1. Kill Your Darlings is an Australian online magazine that is dedicated to arts and culture. They publish a wide range of content, including commentaries, essays and criticisms that run from 1500–2500 words and 1200–1500 words. According to their pitch guide, the minimum payment for non-fiction is $700. To learn more, refer to this page.
  1. True Crime News Weekly brings to their audience “some of the most enthralling and under-reported true crime news from Australia and around the world.” According to their pitch guide, they pay $50 to $500 per article.
  1. Archer Magazine is an Australian publication about sexuality, gender, and identity. They publish articles written by a diverse range of writers, from all levels of experience. According to their writers’ guidelines, they pay $100 AUD for an online piece (about 800 to 1200 words).
  1. Let’s Travel is a bi-monthly travel magazine that focuses on “articles with a twist that offer first person accounts of travel in New Zealand, Australia and the South Pacific Islands.” They also publish a few stories from far flung places like, South East Asia, Europe and Americas. Their “readership demographics is luxury”, so if the pitch is about getting by on a few dollars, they would probably not be interested in it. Their feature articles are 800 to 1,200 words. According to their pitch guide, they pay a flat fee of NZ$300 per story to unpublished writers. To previously published writers, they pay NZ$500.
  1. Make Modern is an Australia-based modern quilt magazine. They publish articles about quilting and profiles of quilters. They are looking for ideas such as a favourite quilter to profile, or the discovery of a new pattern designer or fabric designer.
