  1. Washington FAMILY Magazine is a go-to resource for D.C. area parents. They feature parenting tips, camps and school info, local events, and much more. Most of their writers are local professionals. Articles should be 800-900 words. According to their writer’s guidelines, their average payment for one-time reprint rights is $50 for average-length feature stories.
  1. VISION Vocation Guide is a print and online resource for people who are interested in entering religious life. They publish articles that “provide insight into what it means to be a contemporary Catholic sister, priest, brother, missionary, or monk.” They previously indicated payment of $450 for articles of 1,000 to 1,500 words and $100 for reprints. Current information on submissions is unclear. To contact them, refer to this page.
  1. Ruadán Books is a speculative fiction publisher. They’re looking for articles for their monthly blog, “Thoughts from the Writer’s Desk.” They want articles on “writing (or writing-adjacent) by authors who want to share their expertise, discuss the state of the industry, journal about their writing life, and chat about genres.” They pay 10 cents/word for new non-fiction articles and 3 cents/word for reprints. The word count should be 750 to 2,000 words. To learn more, refer to their submission guidelines.
  1. LIVE is a take-home story paper distributed to Christian adults in Sunday School classes. The paper seeks to “encourage Christians in living for God through stories which apply biblical principles to everyday problems.” They publish true stories, nonfiction, how-to articles, and fiction. However, they do not accept Bible fiction or sci-fi. According to their pitch guide, payment is $0.10 per word for first rights, $0.07 per word for reprint rights, and $35-60 for poetry.   1. Faith Today is a bimonthly Canadian general interest magazine connecting Evangelical Christians. Its content includes feature articles, short essays, news, and profiles of Canadian individuals and ministries. Editors buy both first North American serial print rights and perpetual web rights. According to their guidelines, payment for original personal essays and guest columns is $0.3/word (Canadian dollars). Most other interview-based/researched original writing pay $0.4/word. Reprints pay $0.15/word, books & culture reviews $125 each, and online-only writing pays $50 flat rate.
  1. Mysterion is an ezine of Christian-themed speculative fiction. They are looking for speculative stories–science fiction, fantasy, horror–with Christian themes, characters, or cosmology. Stories can be up to 9000 words. According to their guidelines, they pay 8 cents/word for original stories and 4 cents/word for reprints. To learn more, refer to this page.
  1. The War Cry is a magazine published by the Salvation Army. They’ve been around for 135 years. They accept submissions from freelance writers and, according to their pitch guide, pay $0.35 per word for original articles, and $0.15 a word for reprints. Articles are 800 – 1250 words.   1. The Dark is an online magazine published every month. They publish horror and dark fantasy pieces of 2,000 to 6,000 words. They ask their writers to not “be afraid to experiment or to deviate from the ordinary.” It is important to remember that despite its name, The Dark is not a magazine for “graphic, violent horror.” According to their guidelines, they pay 5 cents per word for original fiction of up to 6,000 words and 1 cent per word for reprint fiction of up to 6,000 words.
